Nancy Burke Innovation in Public Safety Athletic Training Award
This award recognizes an athletic trainer or athletic training ally on the leading edge of public safety athletic training. Award winners are creative, progressive, professional leaders paving the way for athletic trainers in public safety through new ideas and advocacy.

Why first responders need athletic trainers
According to NFPA, in 2022, United States Firefighter injuries totaled 65,650. Of those injuries, 22% of them were from slips/trips/falls, and 31% of them were due to overexertion and strain.

In 2020, FBI statistics reported injury rates for United States Police Officers totaling 60,105. Of the total, 31% of those officers sustained injuries from physical altercations.
